Hard disk check: palimpsest or gdu-notification-daemon ?

Hi

I have Fedora 12 and I want to monitor the health condition of my hard disks.
I use smartd as a background deamon to keep an eye on it.

Is there a way to let gdu-notification-daemon alert me when things go wrong?
If so, how can I do this in XFCE?

I also want to manually check it myself every now and then with palimpsest.

When I type palimpsest, the GUI pops up with everything greyed out.
When I use "sudo palimpsest", I also have the GUI greyed out!
When login as root and run palimpsest, I get:

--------------------
(palimpsest:23714): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to open a connection
to the session bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote
application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the
reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

(palimpsest:23714): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to connect to the running
instance, aborting.
--------------------

Can somebody help me to get this work?

Thank you.

Rob.
