I checked and it wasn't over heating ( I believe ) :

Core1 Temp:  +18.0 °C

Last temp reading (using collectd every 10 seconds) before the machine stopped responding, not super high... :

Well, if it is overheating, you could try running with
the case open and a fan blowing in to see if it manages to
run without hanging with the hacked up improved cooling
system :-).
