Even for open source created products: I have created an A0 poster background with Scribus, it contains a partial transparent image on top of a pattern built of a repeating 100mm square image. Evince as well as ghostview were unable for correct showing the pdf as created by Scribus. Adobe reader did it. The same pitfall is with OpenJava: For true compatibility, one has to use Sun Java. Compiling with OpenJava did not solve the problem...
