Here's one way to do it:

LBITS := $(shell getconf LONG_BIT)
ifeq ($(LBITS),64)
   AM_LDFLAGS = -L/usr/lib64/mysql -lmysqlclient
else
   AM_LDFLAGS = -L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient
Endif
