When I try to enabled desktop effects on F12 it fails saying I need 3D support. Obviously the default nouveau driver doesn't support 3D. Running compiz --replace results in no window manager at all. I have to run metacity --replace to get a work window manager.

If you want 3d games, no it won't provide that. But compiz is supposed to
work with it. (I use metacity though and haven't tested it personally.)
