That is the "first". The last non i686 chips are I believe still in production for embedded systems and embedded PC. Also in the desktop world the VIA C3 is an i686 equivalent but due to a years old historic bug [which we are now stuck with] in the gcc machine definitions won't run gcc "686" code.
