If you're using Gnome, you may have removed the "Notification Area"
which is where the Network Manager applet (and others) appear. Right
click on the panel, and re-add it.

KDE will probably have something with a similar name, and a similar
technique of restoration, and someone else can tell you about that if
you need it.

Thanks, Tim, but I am using XFCE.

It is similar to Gnome. If notification area is already on your panel, then right click that and see whether the Network Manager applet is hidden. The XFCE notification area allows you to choose which applets you want to hide with a collapsible arrow.
