Is there any initiative or attempts to reverse engineer its protocol?

Just drop your land line and use a SIP VOIP client. Then you get a land-line phone number in your country of choice AND you can also use that line to call anywhere when not near your phone, using a Softphone (SIP protocol).

Open standards like SIP make all the difference.

There´s even SIP clients for smartphones... so I can carry my land line with me on my mobile if I want to....
