Patrick,  you do seem to be doing this the hard way.   Did you actually try 

yum install hplip hplip-gui ?

Frank is right - you are missing some dependencies.  Installing the two fedora 
packages will pull them all in.  FWIW, I'm running

hplip-3.9.2-4.fc11.i586
hplip-gui-3.9.2-4.fc11.i586
