DESKTOP=GNOME DESKTOP=KDE When you log in, there should be a dropdown box that will let you select what desktop to use. On my machine it is at the bottom of the screen. But I don't remember if I am using the default settings for GDM. (It is also different if using KDM or XDM.) There is also a program called switchdesk that will let a user set their preferred desktop. (You may have to install it.)
