The drive was purchased on Monday 7/13/09.  And smartctl -A /dev/sdf1 produces:

smartctl version 5.38 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen

on F9 and

smartctl version 5.38 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen

on F11.  I suspect the popup regarding disk failure is bogus.

You don't see it in dmesg. You can see it with
# smartctl -A /dev/(drive)

If you get the popup then your drive is breaking down and you should
replace it (it's probably still under warranty?).
