Which program is writing to my disk?

The "iotop" command will tell you, just as "top" will indiquate what your
processor is busy with.

"iftop", shows what your InterFace to the net is receiving.

"ps" displays information about a selection of the active processes. Try
"ps ax".

"w"  displays  information about the users currently on the machine. If
you open a terminal/console, you're listed added to the list, with the
same identity, of course. It may look to you as if you're logged in twice,
but you're not.
