Not as dumb as one might think.
When I did a 'ntp restart' in init.d the first three items in the list couldnt 
be
stoped,- they weren't running.  a 2nd restart showed everything ok.

After that I could do the mount.
Should have thought of that myself, but your comment made it happen.
