Please file a bug report against 'cups'. It sounds like it might be a problem with either the CUPS 'usb' backend or possibly with the hal-cups-utils package. If you could attach a troubleshoot.txt file to the bug report from the printing troubleshooter (System->Administration->Printing, then Help->Troubleshoot), making sure to first update system-config-printer to the version from updates-testing, that would be really useful.
