Unfortunately I was (and still am to a large degree) a complete newbie when it comes to Linux. (I am much more familiar with OpenBSD.) Since I did not realize I needed to create 2 partitions (system, boot) before installing, I created only 1 partition and now, I can not use the preupgrade option. What you describe is what I have been planning to do if I don't come up with a more attractive alternative.
