You didn't actually mention this in your original post.

If the binary is packaged as an RPM (e.g. Skype or Acrobat Reader), you
can do the following:

	yum --nogpg localinstall package.rpm

If it's not in RPM format (or .deb at a stretch) then yes, you need to
do it all by hand as you said.
