NetworkManager timeout

NM fails to start about 1 time in 3 on my Thinkpad T43.
On these occasions I see
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready
in /var/log/messages .

I suspect that NM is not trying to establish the link for long enough.
Could that be true?
And if so, is there any way of extending the time NM looks for a link?
