grub can be confusing.

yes '/boot/grub/' can be anywhere, grub's 'boot loader' has to be
*installed* on _boot_drive_.

'boot drive' is defined by bios. exception being, if a different 'boot
routine' is loaded, it can chain to other drive, and with some, partition.

log http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/ and you can pull from
a choice of 11 different types of files.
