terrible, stupid bug of initial release - you probably want to edit
manually instead of using system-config-network until you get updates
installed.
What file(s) do I need to update manually? Or else, how can I run the
first yum update with the system in this condition?

edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and fix it, then type
'service network restart'
Thanks -- I'm running the first yum update now. After correcting
ifcfg-eth0 I had been rebooting (and thereby regenerating the same problem
all over again!) instead of doing the crucial step "service network
restart".
