I realize now, after booting to windows for the first time in a
while, that the support for multiple workspace/desktop backgrounds
seems to come from the NVIDIA driver (at least on windows). So my
question is should I get the driver from the NVIDIA website and let
it install itself and rebuild a kernal? (I think that's what it's
going to want to do...) I really miss that particular feature..

Whereas in windows you need an nvidia driver in order to use multiple
workspaces, it's been a fundamental part of kde and gnome for years.
So don't worry :)
hmmm... I may not quite have been clear... I'm getting older and,
methinks, a little absentminded. I'd like to have different backgrounds
on the different workspaces. I find it helpful to remember where I am
and what I'm doing there. The last time I tried LINUX this was a
possibility, but with all the improvements these days that ability seems
to have gone away.
