I'm not a big fan of gnome or KDE either, and for dealing with
mounts, rather than doing them manually, I got ambitious and
whipped out a little Qt app:

It gets all the information from hal same as gnome, but it doesn't
do anything automatically till you tell it to mount or unmount
something. I like being in control better than having
"helpful" software doing unknown things behind my back :-).
