Some of the old bluestone cottages in South Australia are like that,
some are even thicker. I've walked through internal doors in old houses
where it's like you're going through a corridor. Some of the walls were
two or more feet thick.

It's partially for strength, partially insulation. I wish our house was
like that, we're on our third above 40 degree Centigrade day (45, 45,
and I think it reached 43 today), and about a week of 40 degree
thereabouts, ahead.
