err yes ... i ran it without the -n (doh me) ... it is listening ..
and that is confirmed in addition by:

Good News:
-----------
  a) /var/log/gdm/:0.log

 vncext: VNC extension running!
vncext: Listening for VNC connections on port 5900
vncext: created VNC server for screen 0

  b) vncviewer does show something .. but ...

Bad News:
----------
THe client end is not legible - it is all smeared and full of lines
... totally unusable.

If it matters ... the remote end has this graphics chipset:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

  Happy for any suggestions ?

 thanks.
