I tend to use the newer Live USB with a separate persistent /home, and I routinely rewrite the rest of the Live image by using 'livecd-creator' to create new images with all the updates pre-installed. That gives me the updates, and I can blow away the other persistence without missing it too much as long as I keep any personal defaults in my home directory. -- Paul W.
