OK - I've enabled Desktop Effects, but selected only Dim Inactive Windows.  
I'll see how stable this is.  If it's still stable later today I'll add a 
Switcher to them.  I will then try to contact the laptop by ssh if a freeze 
occurs.  I'll report back.
