Tim is correct. He is referring to your root home directory. Default
permissions are 0700. You'll need to chmod to at least 755 for gdm to
display your face.
chmod 755 /home/username
If you're a single user system, you've got nothing to worry about. Yes,
a different method should be setup for this. Possibly gdm accepting
choices for faces through a dbus interface with gdm having a face storage.
