On the other hand, teaching a newbie good security practice from the start will help keep Linux machines from ending up like so many Windows machines. Then again, all your protests about making machines secure by defaults sounds like you want an easier time cracking other peoples machines. What are you going to suggest next? Making your password the same as your user name? Turning off the firewall? Turning on all the 'r' services?
