I have had two or three cases where I have had to generate an xorg.conf file for a machine that only gave me 640x480 resolution :(

For my machine:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]

I have added line(s) 
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" 
so that I could get the best out of my old monitor.  

Also if you know your monitor output, ie., HorizSync and VertRefresh add them here

	VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"

For instance in my machine with my monitor I have:
