Let me rephrase that.  What I meant to say was that without an xorg.conf the best resolution I could get was 640x480.  Using Xorg -configure and testing the xorg.conf.new file copying it over to /etc/X11 and editing it with vi and adding 
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600", I could fully make use of the Monitor's specs and the video card as well :)
