Then why does it say 32-bit operating systems? 64-bit operating systems
have baseline memory demands too.

Hi,
I'm trying to install Fedora-9 on some Dell OptiPlex 620 boxes. I've tried
both graphical and text based installs and get the same problem with both.
When it tries to run anaconda it crashes with a long traceback. It's at the
point where it is probeing for the video card the crash occurs.
Does anybody have the magic incantation I can give to the boot sequence to get
around this.

I see lots of references that F9 supports a encrypted filesystems
natively and I recall that the installer even offered to set up
encryption for me. The question is, how does one set up encryption
later on? I can't find any recent documentation. Google has millions
of hits for all sorts of crazy schemes dating back to very early
fedoras, but I have yet to find documentation for how to do it in F9,
other than reinstalling things from scratch. Anyone have any
pointers?

I have tried to get slim to start as my login manager instead of gdm,
but everything I have tried so far has not worked.
I have installed slim via yum and then tried the following approaches:
First I tried to put the following line in /etc/X11/default-display-manager
/usr/bin/slim
That did not work. Then I tried to put this line in /etc/inittab:
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
This did not work. I then tried to put this line in /etc/sysconfig/desktop
DISPLAYMANAGER="SLIM"
and then added these to lines in /etc/X11/prefdm just after the
GNOME/gdm part:
elif [ "$DISPLAYMANAGER" = SLIM ]; then
preferred=/usr/bin/slim
This did not work either. I have not been able to find a solution that
works. So, how do I change the default display manager from GDM to SLIM?
Any suggestions are welcome

Probably due to the ATI graphics card, is it possible to specify vesa driver
as a boot option i.e "linux vesa".
Alternatively do a text install, at the prompt use
linux text

As I said I tried the text based install and got the same problem.
When I boot from the boot.iso image how do I tell it to use the vesa driver.
If I press <tab> to edit the boot line then adding vesa doesn't work.
As a workaround I'm doing a live CD install on the boxes and I can then
install what I want on them later.

Yesterday I installed F10 and a few issues:
1) After checking the dvd, it ejected and when I inserted it back to
continue the installation, there was a message saying that the there was
no medium. I had to reboot and skip the checking to continue the
installation.
2) At the end of installation, the dvd didn't ejected as expected.
Suggestions:
3) I really liked the icons, but that default background (I think is the
same in F9 and in the login screen) is horrible. I suggest to use "flow"
as default background.
4) I liked the "silk"(?) background. If there could be a theme using it
would be good. In certain way, something like the ubuntu theme, which I
think if very elegant.
5) I also suggest to borrow as an extra theme the the gnome look of
Opensuse 11. I don't know if I'll use, but at least is a interesting.

i recall this being an issue with earlier versions of fedora.

What is usually going on in those cases is that with 4GB RAM you need
some space for PCI etc below the 4GB boundary, that means part of the RAM
has to be mapped above the 4GB boundary which most 32bit OS can't reach
(hugemem Linux kernels can but there is a big performance cost to such
antics)

I didn't read the whole thread,
but did anyone mention the epel.repo :
"Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 5"?
This is a sort of official redhat repository
with extra packages for CentOS.
