I have tried running telinit from xterm and tty1 but it doesn't matter what run level I am starting from, it does the same thing but to differing degrees. I have tried following man pages, info pages and config files and everything seems to be set up correctly but it still doesn't work like it should. The system boots up just fine and even reboots correctly.
