Glad to hear it worked for you. I don't believe X itself (or kdm) looks anywhere on startup. There's a script that does so, but I don't remember where it is. Regardless, keeping it in /home actually works better, for me at least. My machine is single-user, but I reinstall often and keep the same home partition.
