/mnt is a legacy mount point for drives temporarily mounted on the
system. At the time floppy drives were about the only removable disk
available generally, although it was used for tape and similar.

/media is relatively new as a concept, and appears to have come about in
the light of new technology as cd/dvd, usb, etc.

Not much difference there, but the new /media is usually not mounted on
directly, but new drives added as subdirectories and deleted once the
drive is removed.
