With any significant volume of mail you invariably wind up with completely unrelated messages that happen, by coincidence, to have identical subjects. Treating such messages as part of the same thread is not, IMO, acceptable behavior. Whatever its deviations from this algorithm, Thunderbird is still broken in this respect in its default configuration.
