Some sound issues

Some points:

I have installed Audacity...so I imported an mp3 file and I tried to play.
I get the message
Error during audio device opening. Please check playback device options
and sampling frequency of the project But surprise when I go into the
Preferences window I have no choice in playback device and I get only
the information that is using Portaudio v19.

After latest updates (I suppose of pulseaudio) there is no way to have
a working internal Microphone (for example I had a working Skype, now
I can hear sound but no way of recording...whichever are the options
for input devices...)

I can choose between:
default device
HDA intel (hw:Intel,0)
HDA intel (plughw:Intel,0)
pulse
hdmi

running an Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
with snd-hda-intel audio driver
