i do not consider my searching all that intelligent, but from looking at
'startx', 'startkde', 'man startx' and 'man xinit'

'startkde' fires up '/etc/X11/prefdm' which does '. /etc/sysconfig/desktop'.

so at least 'startkde' is dependent on 'etc/sysconfig/desktop'.

have a look at both 'startx' and 'startkde', if have not already.
