in reading your thread, i am presuming that you have gone thru your bios
setup and correctly tried to enable your dvd drive and that controller is
enabled and insured that control/data and power connectors are properly
seated. [with bios update and reinstall of old bios]

as a suggestion, do you have another cd or dvd drive that you can connect
in place of current dvd drive, or another hard drive? this would prove out
that cable and controller are ok. if not, move dvd drive to other controller.

also, when you boot, does bios show 'updating nvram ... ok'? if not, battery
may be getting low.
