Tony,
I tried and tried to install pulse audio on my centos 4.6. First it said it could not find sndfile.pc so I had to download it and change to my correct version. Now it complains about No package 'speexdsp' found So I found speex-devel-1.2-0.10.rc1.fc10.i386.rpm and tried to install it and it complained about error: Failed dependencies: libspeexdsp.so.1 is needed by speex-devel-1.2-0.10.rc1.fc10.i386 speex = 1.2-0.10.rc1.fc10 is needed by speex-devel-1.2-0.10.rc1.fc10.i386 searching for those I can find only for Fedora.
I would not try pulseaudio on CentOS 4.X. I run RHELv4.7 (Basically same as CentOS4.7) with KDE as my desktop and artsd as my sound server. No problems.
This is basically a fedora list. I would go to a CentOS forum or to the RHELv4 list (nahant) if I were you.
