I did, in fact, manage to download the glibc-common rpm using curl
repeatedly and targeting a number of mirrors. I was just very
unsure if it had all the right bits. I checked the rpm's
md5 and sha1 against those you provided and they matched.
I just now installed the rpm on my other (backup) machine and
it seems to be ok (login/logout, start/stop X, reboot). So I do not
think I will need to take you up on your generous offer to send me
the glibc-common rpm but thank you again.
