My drive is quite new, not worn out, and behaves perfectly if Fedora 9
isn't involved.

and i should have asked him what happens if his system is brought up
from a 'cold' boot, to clear drive and then stopped in bios setup or
system boot prompt and he tries to use drive eject button.

do not remember of rom drive lockup in f9, but with f8 and a '3 finger'
reboot causes drive to not be recognized. possible a bug that was
carried into f9.

anyway, f8 and f9 need a good shutdown that will reset all hardware.
