The only way to tell is to create the xorg.conf file. I did that and the
horizontal and vertical rates are well within spec, but of course this
is for the wrong resolution (1400x1050 instead of 1440x900).

I realize I could just mess around with xorg.conf till it works, but
that to me is not a solution. There is clearly a bug in KDE (maybe also
in X or at least system-config-display) and a kludge isn't the answer. I
can accept an xorg.conf file for some unusual requirement such as a
proprietary video driver or even for 2 monitors, but this setup is just
about as basic as it's possible to get and it isn't working.
