f9 install hangs regularly on a gateway laptop

trying to do a fresh f9 install on one of my gateway AMD-64 laptops
and, on a regular basis, the install will hang partway through the
package installation. i've already run a lengthy memory test on the
laptop and it passed. the media is good, so i'm not sure what else i
should be looking at.

once the install hangs, i can't switch back to a virtual console or
get any response at all. thoughts? did i miss something in the
release notes about a possible install kernel option that might be
appropriate?
