Hi every
i have found the couse or at least a work araund for slow working openoffice: if your openoffice is not responsive when clicking toolbar buttons in the head line, the cause may be in your .gnome*, your .gconf*, or your .x* directories. when i removed all of them and logged-in from afresh, openoffice worked nicely.
