When you delete the last email in a folder (local, via pop3) it still shows as deleted (the other emails are hidden as appropriate), or at least the email still shows with the deleted line through it. Or if you select all the messages in the folder, hit delete, you still show the last email and the line through it. But when you click on another folder, and then click back on the original folder, the email is then gone and some message such as below...
