I am the only actual user of this computer, so I created another one
(phred), logged in as phred, and ran Firefox. Then:
        $ find $HOME/.mozilla -name '*.dat'
        /home/phred/.mozilla/firefox/cs4obslb.default/compreg.dat
        /home/phred/.mozilla/firefox/cs4obslb.default/xpti.dat
there isn't any file named pluginreg.dat

Do I have to do anything else as phred to cause Firefox to create
pluginreg.dat?

Nobody else around here runs Linux.
