Yes, it looks very similar except that only Evolution locks up, not the whole machine. System Monitor shows all the Evolution processes are sleeping and not taking up all the CPU and swap as indicated in this bug.

In my case the CPU goes to 100%, so the machine is sluggish but not 100% unresponsive. If I exit evolution everything returns to normal. It will happen every time I compose an email, but will also happen at seemingly random intervals otherwise.

Did you get this backwards? You mean you had the problem with F8 but not with F9?

No, I've only seen it in F9. I think it's related somehow to gnome automatically passing the passphrase in F9, whereas that hasn't worked for me in F8.
