However, if a browser is already open, then it doesn't work correctly. Firefox settings are to open new pages in a new window; all other options are unchecked. The 'open a link in a new *tab*; switch to it immediately' option looked promising, but made no difference. Note I highlighted that it mentions 'tab' as opposed to a new window.
