Gordon,

I'm not sure if this will help, but it took me 3 days to figure out that
I had the wireless button on my desktop turned off instead of on. I
have a fedora Core 7 hp laptop. The problem that is present is that the
light on the wireless button is never activated so the light always
stays off.

I found that every time I toggled the wireless button I had to reboot
the system for the kernel to recognize the change in status of the
wireless card. Rebotting each time you toggle the button a real pain,
and I recently got bitten again when someone using my laptop toggled the
button without my knowledge.

If you are using NetworkManager you should see a status icon in the top
task bar. If you know that you have wireless systems in range they will
be present in the NetworkManager drop down window. If your wireless
button is toggled off none will appear. Another tool you can use to
determine the presence of wireless networks is nm-tool.

Hope this helps you... it took me three days to figure out the toggle
problem.
