On F9, http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml also shows a grey area where the applet should be, and never starts the applet.
Note that a java application eg ldap browser/editor works very nicely out of the box.
about:plugins shows:GCJ Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea) 1.2 gcjwebplugin.so
