Can one save a desktop layout with Gnome (i.e. a "Session Manager")?

Is it possible in Gnome to save a desktop layout and have it restored
when you start Gnome again? I.e. if I have a convenient layout of
terminal windows on one workspace, a browser in another workspace and,
say, jPilot in a third can I save those applications and positions so
that they are started in the same places on the same worspaces when I
start Gnome again later?

Alternatively can you tell Gnome the workspace and position to start
up a number of applications automatically when you start up?

It's certainly possible on other window managers, some of them call it
Session Management, others just do it!
